San Martin, El Salvador- Iglesia Bautista Discípulos de Cristo:
“Por tanto, hermanos míos, les ruego por la misericordia de Dios que se presenten ustedes mismos como ofrenda viva, santa y agradable a Dios. Este es el verdadero culto que deben de ofrecer. No vivan según los criterios del tiempo presente; al contrario cambien su manera de pensar para que así cambien su manera de vivir y lleguen a conocer la voluntad de Dios, es decir, lo que es bueno, lo que les es grato, lo que es perfecto.
Por el encargo que Dios en su bondad me ha dado, digo a todos ustedes que ninguno piense de sí mismo más de lo que debe de pensar. Antes bien, cada uno piense de sí con moderación, según los dones que Dios les haya dado junto con la fe. Porque así como en un solo cuerpo tenemos muchos miembros, y no todos los miembros sirven para lo mismo, así también nosotros, aunque somos muchos, formamos un solo cuerpo en Cristo y estamos unidos unos a otros como miembros de un mismo cuerpo.
Dios nos ha dado diferentes dones, según lo que él quiso dar a cada uno. Por lo tanto, si Dios nos ha dado el don de profecía, hablemos según la fe que tenemos; si nos ha dado el don de servir a otros, sirvámoslos bien. El que haya recibido el don de enseñar, que se dedique a la enseñanza, el que haya recibido el don de animar a otros, que se dedique a animarlos. El que da, hágalo con sencillez; el que ocupa un puesto de responsabilidad, desempeñe su cargo con todo cuidado; el que ayuda a los necesitados, hágalo con alegría.
Ámense sinceramente unos a otros. Aborrezcan lo malo y apéguense a lo bueno. Ámense como hermanos los unos a los otros, dándose preferencia y rerspetandose mutuamente. Esfuércence, no sean perezosos y sirvan al señor con corazón ferviente. Vivan alegres por la esperanza que tienen; soporten con valor los sufrimientos; no dejen nunca de orar. Hagan suyas las necesidades del pueblo santo; reciban bien a quienes los visitan. ”[1]
Antes habia una linea de tren que iba desde San Salvador hasta el oriente del pais que pasaba por San Martín. Durante la guerra civil de (1980-1992) puentes fueron destruidos y la linea de tren fue mas o menos abandonada. Antes del final de la guerra, la gente inicio su asentamiento sobre la linea de tren, especialmente despues del serio terremoto de 1986. El proceso se ha continuado hasta hoy. Mientras personas han salido o han muerto, otros han tomado sus lugares. Recientemente han venido mas como un resultado de las fuertes lluvias de Noviembre del 2009 que llevaron muchas casas hasta la quebrada al sur del Lago de Ilopango.Muchos de ellos perdieron sus casas y todas sus posesiones, pero a lo menos escaparon con sus vidas. Otros no fueron tan afortunados.
La comunidad tiene serios problemas muy presentes. Primeramente no son dueños de la tierra ni pueden comprar el terreno donde viven. La segunda es la lucha contra las “Maras”( Pandillas de jovenes organizados como la MS13 y Calle 18).[2]
Pastor Jaime Peña y la Iglesia Bautista Discípulos de Cristo han estado trabajando en este lugar desde hace 19 años. Jaime tiene mucha energia, ingenioso para organizar a la gente, y visionario en la teologia y la sociologia. Jaime tiene una buena educación y ha viajado mucho que otros pastores de iglesias relativamente pobres. Inicialmente Jaime fue enviado a San Martin por la Iglesia Bautista Emmanuel en San salavdor, quienes daban una pequeña ofrenda como pago. Cuando la Emmanuel dejaron la mision independiente en 1997, Jaime continuo como pastor, pero sin ninguna posibilidad real de recibir pago.
Pero Jaime ya habia organizado y capacitado lideres capaces de dar liderazgo a la congregacion y a la comunidad sin su presencia constante. Por lo tanto, Jaime buscó otro trabajo en una ONG y atendio a las necesiddades de la congregacion cuando tenia tiempo.
En el curso del tiempo, Jaime y la Iglesia Bautista Discipulos de Cristo se asoció con el Comite Central Menonita (Winnipeg) con el objetivo de movilizar la comunidad hasta el otro lado de la carretera ( que divide San Martin por la mitad) a un terreno legal y proveer a la comunidad en el nuevo terreno una casa digna, agua y luz, y un entorno de la comunidad donde la gente pueda convivir en paz.
Las lluvias del 2009 tambien hizo el templo deshabitable. La vision era completa....a una nueva comunidad, un nuevo tipo de iglesia, congregando en casas y siempre trabajando para mantener una comunidad armoniosa y en paz.
Durante 2011, todo esto llegara al cabo gradualmente. Para inicios del 2012 estaran unas 200 familias viviendo en el nuevo terreno. Las capacitaciones y talleres continuan como convivir en paz con sus vecinos y como mantener una comunidad sana y estable.
Jaime es el Director de SEBLA(El seminario en Santa Ana) y tambien es el presidente de FEBES. Las personas que el capacitado continuan trabajando efecientemente con sus socios canadienses.

San Martin, El Salvador- Disciples of Christ Baptist Church: “I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God— what is good and acceptable and perfect. For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think, but to think with sober judgement, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in proportion to faith; ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness. Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honour. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers.”[1]
There used to be a railway line that ran from San Salvador to the eastern side of the country that passed through San Martin. During the civil war (1980-1992) bridges were destroyed, and the line was more or less abandoned. Even before the end of the war, people had begun to squat on the edges of the right of way, especially after the serious earthquake in 1986. The process has continued until the present. As people have left or have died, others have taken their place. Recently arrivals have come as a result of the heavy rains on the fall of 2009 that washed many houses into the steep ravine south of Lake Ilopango. Many of these lost paid up homes and all their possessions, but at least escaped with their lives. Others were not as fortunate.
The community of squatters is faced with several daunting problems. First and foremost is that they do not own the land, nor can they purchase the land, on which they live. The second great struggle is against the “Maras” (organized youth gangs such as MS13 and Calle18).[2]
Pastor Jaime (pronounce hymay) Peña and Disciples of Christ Baptist Church have been working in this area for 19 years. Jaime is energetic, a genius at organizing the people, and a visionary both theologically and sociologically. Jaime is well educated and has travelled more than many pastors of relatively poor churches. Initially Jaime was sent to San Martin by Immanuel Baptist Church in San Salvador, who paid him a stipend. When Immanuel cut the mission loose in 1997, Jaime stayed on as Pastor, but with no real possibility of being paid.
But Jaime had already organized and trained leaders capable of leading the congregation and even the community without his constant presence. Therefore, Jaime found outside work in an NGO, and saw to the needs of the congregation as time would permit.
In the course of time, Jaime arranged for the Mennonite Central Committee (Winnipeg) to partner with Disciples of Christ Church with the goal being to move as many of the community as possible from the squatter settlement to the other side of the highway (that literally dives San Martin in half) to a legal piece of land and to provide for the community on the new land dignified housing, running water, electrical connection, and a community setting where the people can live together in peace.
The rains of 2009 also made the church building unusable. The vision was complete... a new community, a new kind of church, meeting in homes, and always working to maintain a peaceful, harmonious community.
During 2011, all of this is gradually coming together. By the beginning of 2012 there should be some 200 families living on the new land. The training session continue... how to live in peace with one's neighbour, and how to maintain a healthy, stable community.
Jaime is the Director of SEBLA (the seminary in Santa Ana) as well as the President of FEBES. The people he has trained continue to work efficiently in the background along with their Canadian Partner.
